Health Care law coverage confuses families for young adultsA new rule for middle-class and middle-age voters has suggested that young adults without health insurance will soon be able to remain on health care plan of their parents until they cross the age of 26 years.

It was, however, noted by the Obama administration that this provision is expected to help millions. The benefits, though, is proving less immediate than many families expected.

According to the law, health plans don’t have to comply until their first renewal date after Sept. 23. For some plans, that’s as soon as October. For many, it’s January. For others, the compliance date won’t be until May.

That means many college seniors whose parents’ health plans allowed them to stay on until they graduated this spring may face a gap in coverage until the new requirement kicks in.

Soon after the law was passed, Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius called on insurers to close the gap by complying with the law early in such cases. More than 60 major insurance companies and several large employers agreed to do so.

But just because an insurer offers to keep new graduates on the plan doesn’t mean the employer subscribing to the plan will take the insurer up on the option.

Experts are of the view that parents as employers and insurance companies will continue getting more rude awakenings in times to come once the need to offset the added costs of covering these workers’ children longer into adulthood will arise.

Lifespan could reduce with adversity and childhood abuseEmotional pains suffered by human beings in childhood could result in weakened immune systems in the later period of life, according to a new study.

Janice Kiecolt-Glaser, professor of psychology and psychiatry at Ohio State University, said that childhood abuse can have a serious impact on immune system functioning in the latter part of life.

Forty-four percent of them served as primary caregivers for family members suffering from dementia, while 56 percent were non-caregivers.

The researchers took blood samples from each person measuring the levels of two cytokines known to be stress markers – interleukin-6 (IL-6) and tumor necrosis factor (TNF).

They also used a series of surveys to determine the participants’ level of depression, health status, health behaviors and whether they had experienced childhood abuse or neglect.

The surveys also looked for adverse events as kids such as the loss of a parent, serious marital problems between parents, or mental illness or alcoholism within their family.

Lastly, from the blood samples they were able to measure the lengths of telomeres, bits of DNA on the ends of chromosomes.

“Every time a cell divides, it loses a little bit of its DNA at the ends. So the faster that process takes place, the more DNA is lost, and that’s significant,” said Glaser.

The findings were explained at the annual meeting of the American Psychological Association in San Diego.

Fat teens and fatty snacksAdolescents and young adults are nurturing habits of imbalanced food that include too much unhealthy fat, according to a study conducted among school and college students in Delhi by scientists from the National Diabetes, Obesity and Cholesterol Disorders Foundation (NDOCDF) and the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS).

Dr Anoop Misra, lead scientist and director at Fortis Hospital’s department of diabetes and metabolic diseases, said that this unhealthy trend explains the higher prevalence of obesity and abdomen fat deposit in the Asian adolescent.

Consumption of harmful saturated fat and omega 6 polyunsaturated fatty acids was high among the students. But consumption of the healthy omega 3 polyunsaturated fatty acids, or omega 3 PUFA, was low.

This is because a large part of the fat consumed was derived from semi-solid oil and cooking oil heated to high temperatures.

Both are used in the preparation of favourite snacks of students such as burgers, pastries patties, samosa and chhola bhatura.

” The students are in the habit of snacking. They study for an hour and then snack on biscuits and namkeen. They were also consuming ice creams and sugary items such as colas,” Shah said.

The intake of carbohydrates and proteins was, however, found to be within the prescribed limit.

Fat takes more time to get digested and gets deposited in the body, leading to obesity which results in hypertension, diabetes and heart disease.

Obesity and insulin resistance is now being reported often among Asian adolescents.

The study has been published in the Journal of American College of Nutrition.
