Diet for remaining slim foreverIf you have tried every single method to go slim but seen no results then advice of celeb dietician Anita Bean has come to your rescue with her new no-nonsense strategy for a proper diet to help you stay away from fat forever.

Anita, has published Slim Secrets that gives a safe diet based on scientific facts from her experience.

From Timesofindia.indiatimes.com:

Slim Secrets, addresses the psychology and emotions behind dieting which she feels is the main barrier to long term weight loss. “Before you begin working out whether you are going to have broccoli or a chocolate cookie, the starting point of any diet has to be sorting out your emotions. You have to start taking control, not only of your eating but also your whole lifestyle,” she says.

She admits this “all sounds a bit serious,” but adds “the reason why many women have weight issues is because they haven’t got control over what they are eating. Food becomes tangled up with negative beliefs about yourself and your past. It’s got to be a long-term process. If as a child you were hurt or upset and given sweets you might associate food as a reward or use it to hide emotions. I am not talking about heavy-duty psychology here, it’s about getting people to be honest with themselves and face up to what they are doing,” she added.

The Daily Express quoted her, as saying that any diet for losing weight offers short-term results because low calories are taken but often the proposed diet plan is not sustainable.

Government advisers urge ban on steroid online imports

Government advisers urge ban on steroid online imports

Expert drug advisers of the government are pressing for a ban on online imports of anabolic steroids amid growing concern over their use by young boys and men for improving their body image.

The ban is needed as steroids sold online are often contaminated, delivered with wrong dosage instructions, or out of date.

From Guardian.co.uk:

The ACMD’s chair, Professor Leslie Iversen, said steroids were now much too easily available: “If you search online you will see endless offers. The ACMD is the lone voice against this tide of promotion on the internet. We think [an import ban] would have a considerable dampening effect on demand. It may be difficult to enforce but it would act as a simple deterrent.”

Iversen said steroids were becoming a “big phenomenon” in Britain: “There is no question that the number using the drug for sporting reasons is now a minority. The real growth has come in young users who want to improve their body image.”

An ACMD report to the home secretary on anabolic steroids published today quotes the latest figures from the British Crime Survey, estimating that 50,000 people in the past year have used anabolic steroids for non-medical purposes, such as bodybuilding. More than 220,000 told the BCS they had used anabolic steroids.

But drug experts say these are probably underestimates of the numbers using anabolic steroids because many people will not openly admit to using the drugs, even in an anonymous self-report survey such as the BCS. Some needle and syringe exchange programmes for problem drug users have also reported an exponential rise in steroid injectors, according to the report.

James Brokenshire, the drug minister, remarked that steroids are dangerous products that could result in serious psychiatric and physical problems.

Losing temper can be good for you

Posted by admin | Health and You | Thursday 16 September 2010 12:01 am

Losing temper can be good for youAccording to an investigation led by scientists from the University of Valencia (UV), losing temper can be good for human beings as it tends to increase the levels of heart rate, testosterone production, and arterial tension. Loss of temper also leads to stimulation of the left hemisphere and reduction of cortisol (the stress hormone).

The results of this investigation were published in the journal Hormones and Behavior and revealed that anger provokes profound changes in the state of minds of the subjects and in varying psychobiological parameters.

From Timesofindia.indiatimes.com:

“Inducing emotions generates profound changes in the autonomous nervous system, which controls the cardiovascular response, and also in the endocrine system. In addition, changes in cerebral activity also occur, especially in the frontal and temporal lobes”, Neus Herrero, main author of the study and researcher at UV, explains to SINC.

The researchers induced anger in 30 men using the version that has been adapted to Spanish of the procedure “Anger Induction” ( AI), consisting of 50 phrases in first person that reflect daily situations that provoke anger. Before and immediately after the inducement of anger they measured the heart rate and arterial tension, the levels of testosterone and cortisol, and the asymmetric activation of the brain (using the dichotic listening technique), the general state of mind and the subjective experience of the anger emotion.

Neus Herrero, main author of the study and researcher at UV, explains to SINC that an increase in right ear advantage is noticeable to support the model of motivational direction.

Brain function boosted by 11 hours of meditation

Posted by admin | Health Care | Monday 13 September 2010 12:12 am

Brain function boosted by 11 hours of meditationAccording to a recently concluded study, just 11 hours of learning a meditation technique is good enough to provoke structural changes in brain connectivity. This is done by boosting efficacy in a part to help an individual regulate behavior in accordance with their goals.

The technique, which is known as integrative body mind training (IBMT), has been the focus of intense scrutiny by a team of Chinese researchers led by Yi-Yuan Tang of Dalian University of Technology in collaboration with University of Oregon psychologist Michael I. Posner.

From in.news.yahoo.com:

IBMT was adapted from traditional Chinese medicine in the 1990s in China, where it is practiced by thousands of people.

It is now being taught to undergraduates involved in research on the method at the University of Oregon.

The new research involved 45 UO students (28 males and 17 females); 22 subjects received IBMT while 23 participants were in a control group that received the same amount of relaxation training.

The experiments involved the use of brain-imaging equipment in the UO’s Robert and Beverly Lewis Center for Neuroimaging.

A type of magnetic resonance called diffusion tensor imaging allowed researchers to examine fibers connecting brain regions before and after training. The changes were strongest in connections involving the anterior cingulate, a brain area related to the ability to regulate emotions and behaviour.

The changes were observed only in those who practiced meditation and not in the control group.

The changes in connectivity began after six hours of training and became clear by 11 hours of practice.

The study has been published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
