Skin cancer treatment with miracle weed

Posted by admin | Health Care | Monday 31 January 2011 5:01 am

Skin cancer treatment with miracle weedThe British Journal of Dermatology has reported that sap from milkweed, a common garden weed, when applied to the skin could be used to kill specific types of cancer cells.

The discovery is expected to provide hope to hundreds of thousands of Britons afflicted with non-melanoma skin cancer.

From in.news.yahoo.com:

The plant has been used for centuries as a traditional folk medicine to treat conditions such as warts, asthma and several types of cancer.

But for the first time a team of scientists in Australia has carried out a clinical study of sap from Euphorbia peplus, which is related to Euphorbia plants grown in gardens in Britain, according to the Daily Mail.

The study of 36 patients with a total of 48 non-melanoma lesions included basal cell carcinomas (BCC), squamous cell carcinomas (SCC) and intraepidermal carcinomas (IEC), a growth of cancerous cells confined to the outer layer of the skin.

Patients had failed to respond to conventional treatment including surgery, or they refused or were unsuitable for surgery because of their age.

The patients were treated once a day for three consecutive days by an oncologist using a cotton bud to apply enough of the E.peplus sap to cover the surface of each lesion.

Non-melanoma skin cancer is triggered by sun damage and can be disfiguring without treatment though not usually fatal.

Astrology boosts chances of a baby

Posted by admin | Health and Fitness | Friday 28 January 2011 3:40 am

Astrology boosts chances of a babyThe Daily Mail has reported that a couple have been able to become proud parents with fertility astrologer after failing with spiritual healing, feng shui, acupuncture, organic diets, and a host of herbal remedies.

Astro-fertility has helped Mandy and Mark Parry to become a proud parent after four-miscarriages and six failed IVF-treatments made them depressed.

From in.news.yahoo.com:

‘Though I was sceptical, I was also desperate,’ says Mandy. ‘I don’t even read my horoscope and Mark thought it was a complete waste of money. But when you want a baby as badly as I did, you will consider anything.

‘Since Violet was born I feel intoxicated with happiness. I still can’t quite believe she’s here. All of my -scepticism has melted away.’

Astro-fertility works on the assumption that there are only two or three times a year when a woman can become pregnant and go on to successfully give birth.

Those windows are particular to each woman based on her and her partner’s time and place of birth and the alignment of planets at those moments.

It is only when the position of those planets is replicated that a woman can conceive.

‘It sounds like nonsense. But we’d exhausted all other options so I thought ‘Why not’,’ says Mandy, a secondary school teacher.

The news may provide great sense of relief to many couples who have been unable to become parents due to medical or other complications.

Women should be lady-like, not aggressive

Women should be lady-like, not aggressiveResearchers have suggested that women who want to attain success at work should resist the temptation to act like men.

The research from George Mason University in Virginia found women who take an aggressive approach are often less likely to get ahead than those who exhibit more feminine traits.

From in.news.yahoo.com:

If however, they try to conform, promotion comes their way, the research from George Mason University in Virginia found.

The findings, which will dismay feminists, suggest the best way for a woman to succeed in a man’s world is to act like a lady, reports the Daily Mail.

They tally with past research that showed women oozing with self-confidence, assertiveness and other characteristics linked with successful management can be side-lined at work in favour of meeker types.

It is thought that while such traits are highly-prized in men, go-getting women are penalised for not being feminine enough and are seen as less likeable.

The study appeared in a journal published by the British Psychological Society.

Big decisions on food inflation ducked by government

Posted by admin | Reviews | Thursday 20 January 2011 2:25 am

IMG_7776The embattled Congress-led coalition government recently failed to announce major policy decisions for tacking soaring food prices after days of wrangling. The government was able to take only minor measures seen as unlikely to make a major impact.

This approach dashed expectations of a ban on the export of wheat products or futures trading in some commodities to tame food prices that rose 16.91 percent in 2010.

From in.finance.yahoo.com:

Governments around the world have been taking measures to tackle soaring grain prices and head off social unrest, with North African countries Libya, Algeria and Morocco cutting taxes on foods or regulating prices and stepping up supplies.

India has the highest food inflation of any major Asian economy, but other emerging markets such as China and Brazil are also battling double-digit food price rises.

The government said in a statement it had contracted the import of 1,000 tonnes of onions and would step up purchases of essential commodities such as edible oils and lentils, and create a panel to recommend ways to fight inflation.

Analysts questioned whether the measures went far enough to tame prices, after days of fractious meetings between the ruling Congress party and a major ally over who should be held responsible for the increases.

“Looking at these measures, the government appears helpless. It literally has thrown up its hands. For the past one year officials have been saying prices will come down,” said Paranjoy Guha Thakurta, a political economist.

Officials have put pressure on a beleaguered coalition already battling multi-billion dollar corruption cases and an emboldened opposition.

Drinking beer is good for health

Drinking beer is good for health

Drinking up to a pint of beer a day is good besides being good for reducing the risk of diabetes and high blood pressure, according to doctors.

It was claimed by the involved doctors that moderate consumption of beer could even help people lose weight if combined with a healthy diet.

From in.news.yahoo.com:

“In this study we banish myths. We know that beer is not to blame for obesity,” the Daily Mail quoted Dr Lamuela as saying.

Beer contains folic acid, vitamins, iron and calcium, which the study claims provide a ‘protective’ effect on the cardiovascular system.

The subjects who regularly drank moderate amounts of beer were less likely to suffer from diabetes and high blood pressure, and had a lower body fat content.

The researchers from Barcelona and Madrid suggested women should drink two small glasses of beer a day while men should drink three, combined with a healthy diet and exercise.

Beer provides the same health benefits attributed to moderate consumption of wine, as per Doctors Ramon Estruch and Rosa Lamuela from Barcelona and Madrid.
