The Cardinals also signed punter Dave Zastudil and released tackle Jake Vermiglio.

From NYTimes.com:

Croyle, who played for Kansas City — mostly as a backup — the last five seasons, was added after backup John Skelton and Hall were injured, leaving Kevin Kolb and Rich Bartel as the team’s only quarterbacks going into Saturday night’s preseason home game against San Diego.

Max Hall partially dislocated his left shoulder in practice on Monday, which is the same injury that sidelined him the final four games last season.

Middle-Aged Women On Antidepressants Prone To Stroke Risk

Scientists have claimed that middle-aged women who take antidepressants could be nearly 40 per cent more likely to have a stroke.

It was however unclear whether it is the pills or some other factor linked to depression that raises the risk.

From Dailymail.co.uk:

A study of more than 80,000 women aged 54 to 79 over a six-year period found those who had been depressed were 29 per cent more likely to have a stroke.

However, patients who took Prozac, Seroxat or similar medication were 39 per cent more at risk. Until recently there was little research on the long-term dangers of common antidepressants taken by millions of Britons a year.

But only last week a study by British scientists indicated they increased the risk of death, heart attacks and falls in the elderly.

Women should not stop taking their medication as they could not be sure it was causing strokes, health experts said.

Putting Coffee in Sunscreen Could Ward Off Wrinkles and Skin Cancer

Posted by admin | Health Care | Tuesday 16 August 2011 11:19 pm

Scientists believe that a caffeine-based sunscreen could be useful in helping people tan safely.

A caffeine-based sun cream may protect against the most common form of skin cancer, while producing a bronzed glow, besides keeping wrinkles at bay.

From Dailymail.co.uk:

Putting Coffee in Sunscreen Could Ward Off Wrinkles and Skin CancerThe appealing thought comes from American scientists who have shown that caffeine triggers the death of UV-damaged cells, while leaving healthy ones unharmed.

To test the idea that caffeine provides protection by interfering with a skin protein called ATR, they genetically-engineered mice so that they made much less ATR than usual.

The animals and normal mice were then put under UV lamps.

Those low in ATR took longer to develop skin cancers.

Professor Dot Bennett, of St George’s University of London, said: ‘Caffeine lotion might promote tanning a little, since this family of molecules stimulates pigment cells to make more pigment.’

Ex-Jake ‘Exaggerated’ Pain During Exam

Dr. Gaurav Kapur, a spine specialist who examined the ex-firefighter now accused of defrauding the city by claiming disability while competing as a bodybuilder, has remarked that Albert Arroyo was given to “exaggeration,” with displays of “grimacing” that weren’t borne out by the medical evidence.

Arroyo was referred to Dr. Kapur by his lawyer in 2008, the doctor testified yesterday in Arroyo’s federal fraud trial.

From News.bostonherald.com:

Kapur told jurors Arroyo never mentioned he was a professional bodybuilder, nor did he bring up the March 2008 fall down a flight of firehouse stairs on which his pension claim was based. Arroyo could face up to 20 years in prison if convicted.

Meanwhile, jurors were shown a May 2008 competition video of a near-naked Arroyo freestyle flexing to music in just a pair of shiny black bikini briefs as onlookers cat-called their approval. They also were shown a still photo of Arroyo oiled up and glistening, holding two dumbbells.

Another firefighter who trained Arroyo when he was on the job said bodybuilding came naturally to the defendant.

“He could be a champion,” Reynolds Shepherd, guru of the Boston Fire Department’s Firefighters Are Athletes Too (FAT) fitness program, testified.
