Key Role Played By Dentists In Oral Cancer Detection
According to the Academy of General Dentistry, regular dental examinations may help in detecting oral cancer besides being of great use to help keep teeth and gums healthy.
The group recommends that people get a dental exam from a general dentist every six months as part of Oral Cancer Awareness Month in April.
“The next time you visit your dentist, ask about an oral cancer screening,” academy spokesperson Dr. Seung-Hee Rhee advised in an academy news release.
“Your dentist will feel for lumps or irregular tissue changes in your neck, head, cheeks, and oral cavity and thoroughly examine the soft tissues in your mouth, specifically looking for any sores or discolored tissues. Although you may have already been receiving this screening from your dentist, it’s a good idea to confirm that this screening is a part, and will remain a part, of your regular exam,” Rhee said.
“If it is not diagnosed and treated in its early stages, oral cancer can be deadly,” Rhee said. “Treatment for advanced stage oral cancer may lead to chronic pain, loss of function, permanent facial and oral disfigurement following surgery. The earlier the cancer is detected and treated, the better the outcome.”
Paleo Diet-Build Muscle Mass and Lose Body Fat
It does not matter whether you are planning to burn down fat or build muscle mass, diet is an important element necessary for your success. In this piece of information, we would be focusing on Paleo diet, which is a common diet regimen for reducing body fat, gaining muscles, preventing heart diseases, and improving cholesterol.
The first and foremost thing for you to remember is that the foods you put into your body every day are the biggest determining factor in how you would like. If you maintain high standards of diet, you would experience positive results and if you neglect the importance of nutrients in your diet, your body would be the biggest loser, today or tomorrow.
If you want to stay high on muscle mass and performance, the Paleo diet regimen or the Paleolithic Diet approach is an excellent choice for you. This diet is all about avoiding every kind of processed food available in the market and preferring foods that come straight from the ground.
It is worthwhile to note that foods such as lean beef, lean pork, venison, liver meat, crab, Brazil nuts, cashews, lobster, oysters, shrimp, sesame seeds, pumpkin seeds, chestnuts, all fruits (except dried), almonds, pistachios, all vegetables (except root vegetables), sunflower seeds, and Macademia nuts are allowed in the Paleo diet plan. On the other hands, products such as diet soda, wine, tea, beer, olive oil, flaxseed oil, coffee, dried fruits, trail mix, and canola oil are allowed in moderation in the Paleo diet regimen. The products that are not allowed in this diet plan are bean, white rice, wheat, sweet potatoes, beans, lentils, peanuts, yams, peanut butter, milk, yogurt, whey products, butter, cheese, and oats.
A typical menu for the Paleo diet includes sliced lean ham, 1 cup coffee, and 2 cups of mixed berries in the morning followed by 1 apple, 1 cup water, 10 almonds, and low sodium beef jerky as the snack. The lunch includes 2 cups of melons, 1 cup water, large serving of mixed greens’ salad, 4 oz salmon, and 1 tablespoon of olive oil and the snack after it includes 3 oz grilled chicken, 1 cup water, 1 serving or raw vegetables, and 2 kiwis. The Paleo diet dinner includes 12 almonds, 1 cup water, 2 cups of steamed broccoli and cauliflower, and 3 oz grilled lean steak while the snack after it includes 3 oz grilled fish, 1 cup water, 1 handful of walnuts, and 1 orange.
By following the Paleolithic Diet approach, you can easily control the levels of blood sugar and cholesterol. Moreover, the Paleo diet is extremely successful in reducing food cravings and battle against ongoing fatigue besides preventing the occurrence of diseases such as diabetes. This kind of diet is also useful in reducing the risk of heart diseases such as stroke and improving the cholesterol profile by restricting dairy and high fat meat sources, cutting down on saturated fats, and consuming healthy fats.
All in all, the Paleo diet can easily offer you endless health benefits that help you cut down on body fat and weight and promote muscle mass and definition at the same time.
Tougher Probe Of Engineered Salmon Urged
On Tuesday, three U.S. consumer groups petitioned the Food and Drug Administration to subject a new genetically engineered salmon to a more rigorous review process presently in place before the fish can be approved as safe to eat.
AquaBounty Technologies’ AquAdvantage salmon, the fish at issue, is presently classified as a new animal drug for the purposes of FDA review. The petition calls for the salmon to be classified as a food additive that would require a more rigorous FDA review.
AquAdvantage, if approved, would be the first genetically altered animal for human consumption in the United States.
Only 1 in 4 Young Teens Uses Sunscreen Regularly
A new U.S. study has revealed that just 25 percent of 14-year-olds said they used sunscreen regularly despite the fact that sunburn in childhood greatly raises a person’s lifelong risk for skin cancer.
Researchers led by Dr. Stephen Dusza of Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, in New York City, examined data on 360 fifth graders in Massachusetts who were surveyed in 2004 and again three years later in 2007.
The years of “periadolescence” covered by the study (ages 11 to 14) appear to be “a crucial period” when young people often either “increase or decrease their use of sun protection, obtain sunburns, or change their tan-promoting attitudes,” the authors wrote.
“Adolescence and teenage years are tremendously difficult because it is a period of flexing independence, coupled with feelings of invincibility,” they added.
The study was published in the February issue of Pediatrics.
Obama Administration Launches Healthcare Drive
The Obama administration recently said $1 billion of federal funds allocated in last year’s health reform law would be going toward innovation programs designed to boost jobs and improve patient care.
The announcement is the latest attempt of the administration to show that it is working outside of a deeply-divided Congress to create jobs.
From Reuters.com:
The administration will award grants in March to people who come up with the best ideas to lift care and save money for those enrolled in the federal healthcare programs Medicare, Medicaid and the Children’s Health Insurance Program.
However, the administration did not say how many jobs the measure would create.
Don Berwick, head of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, said a good example includes the Baylor Heart Hospital in Dallas which has worked to lower readmission rates for congestive heart failure.
“We are concerned that at a time of significant uncertainty for the fiscal health of the U.S. government, funds are being expended by the Innovation Center with little to no actual value provided,” three Republicans on the Senate Finance Committee wrote to Health and Human Service Secretary Kathleen Sebelius.
