Vitamin D deficiency:

In the lack of Vitamin D, human bones can become brittle, thin, or misshapen. The deficiency may also lead to rickets in children, bone softening diseases, osteoporosis, and osteomalacia in adults.

The deficiency may originate from inadequate sunlight exposure or kidney and liver disorders. It is worth noting here that Vitamin D derived from exposure to sun, food, and supplements is biologically inert in its nature and requires undergoing two hydroxylations in the body for activation. The first of these two hydroxylations happens in the liver to promote conversion of Vitamin D to calcidiol, also known as 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D]. The second hydroxylation happens primarily in the kidney and forms the calcitriol, physiologically active 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D [1,25(OH)2D].

Groups at Risk of Vitamin D deficiency:

Breastfed infants, elderly people, people with a dark skin tone, and people with limited exposure to the sun are some of the high-risk groups for Vitamin D deficiency.

Vitamin D availability (unnatural form):

Vitamin D can be found in most multivitamins, generally in strengths from 50 IU to 1,000 IU and available in varying options such as soft gels, capsules, tablets, and liquids.

Recommended Intake of Vitamin D:

The recommended intake of Vitamin D for males, female, pregnant/lactating women under the age of 50 years is 5 micrograms (200 IU or International Units) daily. For people in the age group of 50-70 years, the recommended intake is 10 micrograms daily (400 IU) and 15 micrograms daily (600 IU) for people above the age of 70 years.
