All about Vitamin D

Vitamin D allows the body to absorb calcium so that bones and teeth along with other body parts can function in a normal manner. It is important to note that fat-soluble vitamins like Vitamin D are stored in fatty tissue of the human body. In addition to the abovementioned benefit, this vitamin also helps the body retain the right amount of calcium and phosphorus in the blood so that routine activities of body can be performed in a balanced way.

Some of the widely-used sources of Vitamin D are cheese, cream, fortified milk, margarine, oysters, fish, and butter. It is worthwhile to note here that the human body gets this vitamin after being exposed to the sunshine.
Excess intake of vitamin D can lead to muscle weakness, vomiting, or kidney stones and its deficiency can lead to rickets in children and osteoporosis in adults. It is therefore important to follow the recommended dose of this vitamin.
The recommended dosage of Vitamin D is:
- 5 mcg/day for infants between 0-12 months (mcg-micrograms)
- 5 mcg/day for children between the ages of 1-13 years
- 5 mcg/day for individuals between ages 14-50 years
- 10 mcg/day for individuals between 51-70 years
- 15 mcg/day for individuals over 70 years
