Isotonic way of putting the muscles to work has caught great popularity off late. It primarily involves a mechanism in which the size of the muscles changes but the tension levied on them remains unchanged. Some of its examples include lifting an object off a desk, walking or running. These activities involve isotonic contractions in which the magnitude of pressure put on the muscles does not undergo any apparent change. These isotonic movements are also called as Auxotonic contractions.

There are mainly of two types:

  • Concentric: In this the tension in the muscles is raised to meet the resistance offered. It is then continued to remains the same even as the muscle shortens.
  • Eccentric: In this the muscle size increases because the resistance offered is greater than the force produced by the muscle.

As every muscle moves along its full range, isotonic contractions create tension with full effort at the beginning as well as the end of each exercise. Isotonic exercises are carried out using dumbbells or fixed equipment like barbells. The difference between both mainly lies in the magnitude of resistance used in both.

Both forms of isotonic contractions are of great advantage in strengthening the muscles and the fact that they are highly inexpensive makes them more popular among people now a days. However another reason that makes them so high in demand is that they help put all muscles in use by employing a wide range of exercises.
